The verandah is where the pace slows. It is the porch, the gallery, the stoop, the shade of a tree, a quiet stretch of beach. It is any place you sit to catch yourself before the day carries you off.

That is the spirit of this book. One proverb, lived for a whole week. A single piece of Caribbean wisdom to sit with, turn over, and let settle into how you move.

The wisdom was never meant to be rushed. It was meant to be lived, one week at a time.

Across fifty-two weeks, the book moves with the year. Each week brings a Caribbean proverb, a reflection, four prompts and a deeper question. Write in a notebook, record a voice note, or sit with a question on a walk. There is room to make the practice your own.

It was written for women who have given a great deal to others, and who are ready to give a little of that attention back to themselves. Unhurried. Grounded. In your own voice, at your own pace.

Cheryl-Anne R. Gayle

Cheryl-Anne R. Gayle was born in Trinidad and has been rooted in Jamaica since 1990, where the proverbs of her childhood found new meaning. After more than thirty years as an educator, eleven of them as a high school principal, she writes from a lifetime of holding space while others unfold. She is most herself on the verandah at daybreak, plants around her and coffee in hand.
